How a Tax Refund Happens in Pakistan
Many taxes in Pakistan are collected before you file. Your employer deducts tax from your salary, your electricity distributor adds an advance tax to the bill, and your bank deducts tax when you withdraw cash. For most of these, the amount is only an advance payment against your final income tax for the year.
When you file your return, FBR compares what you owe on your taxable income with what was already collected. If the advance taxes are higher than the tax due, the difference is an excess and you can claim it back as a refund. If they are lower, you pay the balance with your return. This calculator does that comparison in one step.
Adjustable Taxes You Can Claim and Final Taxes You Cannot
The key question is whether a deduction is adjustable or final. Adjustable taxes are credited against your final liability, so any excess can be refunded. Final taxes settle your liability on that particular income and are not refundable.
- Usually adjustable: tax deducted from your salary, advance tax on electricity bills (see how DISCO bill taxes work), tax on cash withdrawals, and advance tax on vehicle registration.
- Often final: some taxes on specific income types, such as certain profit on debt and dividend withholding. Check the section that applies before you include them.
If you are not sure about a particular deduction, leave it out of the calculator. A conservative estimate is safer than an optimistic one.
Worked Example
Suppose your taxable salary is Rs 1,800,000 a year (Rs 150,000 a month). On the FY 2026-27 slabs, your tax is Rs 6,000 plus 11% of the amount above Rs 1,200,000, which is Rs 6,000 + Rs 66,000 = Rs 72,000.
During the year Rs 72,000 was deducted from your salary, Rs 15,000 was added to your electricity bills as advance tax, and Rs 6,000 was deducted on cash withdrawals. That is Rs 93,000 in adjustable taxes against Rs 72,000 owed, so your estimated refund is Rs 21,000.
How to Claim Your Refund
- Collect proof: your salary certificate or withholding statement, electricity bills and bank statements.
- Make sure you are a filer with an NTN and an IRIS account. See how to become a tax filer.
- File your return and report your income and the taxes that were withheld. If advance taxes exceed your liability, the return shows the excess.
- Add your bank account details in your IRIS profile and follow the current FBR steps for submitting the refund claim.
- Respond quickly if FBR asks for documents, and keep copies of everything you submit.
The exact screens and timelines change, so check the latest guidance on the FBR website when you file. The 31 October 2026 deadline for Tax Year 2026 returns is also worth noting if you have not filed yet.
Common Mistakes That Delay or Reduce a Refund
- Counting final taxes as adjustable, which inflates the estimate.
- Entering gross salary instead of taxable income after allowed deductions.
- Using the wrong tax year. This calculator uses the FY 2026-27 slabs, so for another year enter your own liability from your return.
- Not keeping bills and withholding statements that match the amounts you claim.
- Forgetting tax credits you qualify for, such as for certain donations or pension contributions.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I am due a tax refund in Pakistan?
You are due a refund when the adjustable (advance) taxes deducted from you during the tax year, such as salary withholding, electricity bill tax and cash withdrawal tax, add up to more than the income tax calculated on your taxable income. The calculator above compares the two numbers for you.
Which taxes can I get back?
Only adjustable taxes, also called advance or minimum-credit taxes, can be set against your final liability and refunded if there is an excess. Final taxes are the end of the matter and are not refundable. Check the withholding section that applies to each deduction before you claim it.
Do I have to be a filer to claim a refund?
Yes. A refund is claimed through your income tax return, so you need an NTN, an IRIS account and a filed return. Non-filers cannot claim a refund. See our guide on how to become a tax filer.
How long does an FBR refund take?
There is no fixed time. FBR verifies the claim against the withholding records and may ask for documents, so keep your salary certificate, bills and bank statements ready. Follow the latest guidance on the FBR website for current processing steps.
Why is my result different from my actual return?
This is an estimate based on the FY 2026-27 slab table and the figures you type in. Your return may differ because of deductions, credits, other income, surcharge or a different tax year. If you already know your liability from your return, enter it in the override box.
