TAX ACROSS JOB CHANGES
Multi-Year Salary Tax Calculator Pakistan 2026-27
Changed jobs mid-year? Each employer withholds tax as if you worked for them all year. See your real combined tax liability — and whether you owe more at filing time.
Months across all employers should add up to 12. Based on official FBR salary tax slabs for FY 2026-27.

Why Changing Jobs Mid-Year Almost Always Under-Withholds Your Tax
Here’s the mechanic most people never get explained to them: each employer you work for calculates your monthly withholding tax as if you were going to earn that same salary from them for the entire financial year. If you switch jobs partway through the year, both employers do this calculation independently, each unaware of what the other paid you. The result is that your combined annual income — and the tax slab it actually falls into — is almost always higher than either employer accounted for on their own, leaving you with a shortfall to settle when you file your return.
Worked Example: Job Switch in October
Suppose you earned Rs. 250,000/month at your first employer from July to September (3 months), then moved to a new role paying Rs. 320,000/month from October to June (9 months):
- Employer 1 assumed: Rs. 250,000 × 12 = Rs. 3,000,000 annual → withheld tax based on this slab, for 3 months only
- Employer 2 assumed: Rs. 320,000 × 12 = Rs. 3,840,000 annual → withheld tax based on this slab, for 9 months only
- Your real combined annual income: (Rs. 250,000 × 3) + (Rs. 320,000 × 9) = Rs. 750,000 + Rs. 2,880,000 = Rs. 3,630,000
Rs. 3,630,000 falls in the 25% slab bracket (Rs. 3,200,001 – Rs. 4,100,000), with a base of Rs. 316,000 plus 25% of the amount over Rs. 3,200,000. Neither employer individually pushed you that high on their own books, so the combined liability calculated from your real total income is very likely more than the sum of what both employers withheld separately — and that gap becomes payable, with possible surcharge, when you file.
What You Should Actually Do About It
- Get your salary certificate / tax deduction certificate from both employers at year end — you’ll need both to reconcile your real position.
- Declare income from all employers in a single annual return — not just your current job. FBR cross-checks employer withholding statements, so leaving out a previous employer’s income is easy to catch and gets flagged.
- Set aside the estimated shortfall rather than being surprised by it at filing time — this calculator exists specifically so you can see that number in advance instead of after the fact.
- Ask your new employer whether they’ve accounted for prior income. Some employers, if given your previous salary certificate, will adjust withholding for the rest of the year to reduce the year-end gap — but this isn’t automatic and you usually have to ask.
This Also Applies to Bonuses and Irregular Payments
The same under-withholding problem shows up with bonuses, commission spikes, and any month where your pay jumps well above your usual salary — the employer’s payroll system often annualizes that one high month rather than smoothing it, throwing off your monthly withholding pattern even without a job change. If you’re trying to understand how a raise specifically shifts your take-home pay, the Salary Increment Calculator breaks that down separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I owe extra tax after changing jobs?
Each employer withholds tax assuming you work for them the whole year at that salary. If your new job pays more, your combined annual income pushes you into a higher slab than either employer accounted for individually, leaving a shortfall to pay when you file your return.
How do I calculate tax across two employers in one year?
Add up the actual salary earned from every employer during the tax year, then apply the FBR slabs to that combined total. Compare it to what was already withheld across all employers — the difference is what you owe or can claim back.
Can I get a refund instead of owing more?
Yes. If your new job pays less than your old one, or you had a gap between jobs, your employers may have collectively over-withheld tax. Filing your return lets you claim that excess back as a refund or adjustment.
Where do QuickTaxPK’s tax figures come from?
All rates are based on the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 as amended by the Finance Act 2026, cross-checked against official FBR notifications. This page was last reviewed on 22 September 2026.
Will FBR know I worked for two employers in the same year?
Yes. Every employer in Pakistan is required to file withholding tax statements naming each employee they paid and how much tax was deducted. FBR’s system matches these statements against your CNIC, so both employers’ records show up against your name automatically — there’s no practical way to leave one off your annual return without it being flagged during processing.
