LIFE INSURANCE & TAKAFUL PAYOUTS · SECTION 7G
Insurance Tax Calculator Pakistan 2026-27
Work out tax on your life insurance or takaful payout under Section 7G — only the gain is taxed, not your full payout.
Death benefits and disability payouts are fully exempt. This calculator is for maturity / surrender payouts on savings-linked life or takaful policies.

What Section 7G Actually Taxes (It's Not Your Whole Payout)
A lot of people panic when they hear "insurance payouts are taxed now" and assume FBR takes a cut of the full maturity amount. That's not how Section 7G of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 works. It only taxes the gain — the difference between what your life insurance or takaful policy pays out and the total premiums you actually put in over the years. If you paid Rs. 2 million in premiums and the policy matures at Rs. 2.3 million, only that Rs. 300,000 gain is in scope, not the full Rs. 2.3 million.
The rate you pay on that gain depends entirely on how long you held the policy before it matured or you surrendered it:
| Holding Period | Tax Rate on Gain |
|---|---|
| 1 year or less | 15% |
| More than 1 year, up to 4 years | 10% |
| More than 4 years | 0% (exempt) |
This structure is deliberately designed to discourage people from using life insurance as a short-term investment wrapper to dodge tax on regular savings — genuine long-term life and takaful policies held past 4 years still come out completely tax-free on the gain, which is how insurance is meant to be used.
Worked Example: Policy Surrendered After 3 Years
Suppose you paid Rs. 1,500,000 in total premiums into a savings-linked takaful plan and surrendered it after 3 years for a payout of Rs. 1,850,000:
- Gain: Rs. 1,850,000 − Rs. 1,500,000 = Rs. 350,000
- Holding period: 3 years → falls in the "1–4 years" bracket → 10% rate
- Tax due: Rs. 350,000 × 10% = Rs. 35,000
- Net amount you receive: Rs. 1,850,000 − Rs. 35,000 = Rs. 1,815,000
Had you waited just one more year to cross the 4-year mark, that Rs. 35,000 would have been zero.
Does This Apply to Pure Term Insurance?
Practically no, because pure term life insurance has no maturity payout or cash value to a living policyholder — there's simply no "gain" to tax under normal circumstances. Section 7G is aimed squarely at savings-linked and investment-linked life insurance and takaful products, where the policy accumulates a cash value over time that can exceed what was paid in.
Common Mistakes With Insurance Tax
- Assuming the entire payout is taxed. Only the gain above your total premiums paid is in scope — your own contributions come back to you tax-free.
- Not tracking total premiums accurately. Insurers can usually provide a premium payment history statement; without it, you can't calculate your real gain.
- Surrendering just before a bracket changes. Cashing out at 3 years 11 months instead of waiting one more month can mean paying 10% tax you could have avoided entirely.
- Confusing this with health or motor insurance. Section 7G is specific to life insurance and family takaful products with a savings/investment component — it has nothing to do with health, motor, or general takaful policies.
If you're weighing insurance against other long-term savings options, it's worth comparing this against how Zakat obligations apply to accumulated savings, and checking your overall position with the Pakistan Income Tax Guide.
Section 7G Tax Rates — FY 2026-27
| Holding Period | Tax Rate on Gain |
|---|---|
| Within 1 year | 15% |
| 1 to 4 years | 10% |
| More than 4 years | 0% (exempt) |
Tax applies only to the gain (payout minus premiums paid), not the full payout. Death benefits and disability-triggered payments are exempt regardless of how long the policy was held. Insurers and takaful operators withhold this tax at source under Section 151B.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is my life insurance payout taxable in Pakistan?
Only the gain on a maturity or surrender payout is taxable under Section 7G, and only if the policy was held for 4 years or less. Death benefits and disability payouts are always exempt, and gains on policies held over 4 years are also exempt.
How do I calculate tax on my insurance payout?
Subtract the total premiums you paid from your gross payout to find the gain, then apply 15% if held within 1 year, 10% if held 1–4 years, or 0% if held more than 4 years.
Who deducts this tax?
The insurance company or takaful operator withholds Section 7G tax at the time of paying you, under Section 151B, so you generally receive the payout net of tax already.
Where do QuickTaxPK's tax figures come from?
Rates are based on Section 7G of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 as introduced by recent Finance Acts, last reviewed on 22 September 2026.
Who deducts the Section 7G tax — me or the insurer?
The insurance company withholds the tax at source before paying out the maturity or surrender amount, similar to how banks deduct withholding tax on profit. You receive the net amount directly, and the insurer reports the deduction to FBR. You should still declare the gain in your annual return, since the withheld amount counts as tax already paid against your total liability.
