Shares Capital Gains Tax Calculator Pakistan 2026

Estimate capital gains tax on PSX shares and securities using the holding-period rates in the Finance Act 2026.

How capital gains tax on shares works

Capital gain on listed securities is taxed under Section 37A of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001. The tax is calculated on your gain, which is the sale price minus the purchase price and allowable costs. The longer you hold, the lower the rate, and it reaches zero after six years for securities acquired on or after 1 July 2024.

The National Clearing Company or your broker usually collects the tax when you sell, and the amount appears in your broker statement.

Worked example

You bought shares for Rs 1,000,000 and sold them after 8 months for Rs 1,400,000 with Rs 10,000 in costs. Gain is Rs 390,000. As a filer at 15%, tax is Rs 58,500. If you had waited past six years the rate would be 0%.

How to use the shares capital gains tax calculator

Type what you paid for the shares, what you sold them for and any brokerage or other costs, then select how long you held them. The shares capital gains tax calculator works out your net gain, applies the matching holding-period rate and shows the tax and the gain you keep.

  • Count the holding period from the date you bought the shares to the date you sold them.
  • Add commissions and fees as costs so the gain is not overstated.
  • A loss shows zero tax; the rules for setting losses against other gains are limited, so ask an adviser if you have large losses.

If you invest through a mutual fund the rates are different, and gains on property follow a separate scheme covered in the property capital gains tax calculator.
