Understanding Pakistan Tax Categories

Income & Salary Tax

Salaried individuals in Pakistan are taxed on a progressive slab system set annually by FBR. Income up to Rs. 600,000/year is tax-free; rates rise up to 35% for income above Rs. 7,000,000/year. See the full FBR Tax Slabs 2026-27 breakdown.

Property Tax

Buying property triggers advance tax under Section 236K; selling triggers Section 236C tax. Renting out property is taxed under Section 155. Rates depend heavily on filer status — non-filers pay substantially more at every stage.

Vehicle Tax

Vehicles are subject to two separate taxes: annual provincial token tax (to keep registration valid) and one-time federal advance tax under Section 231B (paid at purchase/transfer). Non-filers pay up to 3x more on the federal component.

PTA Mobile Tax

Phones brought into Pakistan from abroad must be registered with PTA, triggering a tax based on the phone declared USD value and CNIC vs passport registration type.

Zakat

Separate from income tax, zakat is a 2.5% religious obligation on net wealth above the nisab threshold, calculated annually on the silver standard.

Insurance & Investment Tax

Gains on life insurance and takaful payouts above premiums paid are taxable under Section 7G, with the rate depending on the holding period.
